Singular Cycles was launched in March 2007 by Sam Alison with a single frameset – the Swift. This was very much the early days of 29” wheeled bikes, especially so in the UK. The Swift quickly developed a loyal fan base for its sublime ride quality and classically simple appearance.
Over time new models were added, running the gamut from classic styled lugged road bikes (the Osprey), to hard hitting steel hardtails (the Buzzard) via racey Titanium, cyclocross bikes, fat bikes and 29+. Singular has also been at the very forefront of development of the niches now known as ‘monstercross’ or ‘gravel’ bikes – fundamentally go anywhere, do anything bikes with 700c wheels and drop handlebars.
This relentless drive for innovation and development led down some interesting and fruitful paths, others less so. Increased competition thanks to many of the bike styles developed by Singular hitting the main stream and those practical aspects of managing the business meant what has always been a one-man-band had to grow.
So as of February 2016 Sam has entered a partnership with Frank Dressler-Lehnhoff, owner of long-time Singular dealer Wheelsports in Germany. Frank has had a passion for Singular frames since the very early days of the brand and is intimately familiar with the products and ethos. The ‘operations’ side of the business will now be undertaken at his location in western Germany outside Frankfurt. Sam will continue designing the great bikes he always has done as well as providing great service to both retail and wholesale customers.
2016 will be a year of consolidation with the range being trimmed right back to three core models – the Swift, Puffin and the new Kite disc. Like pruning an apple tree, narrowing the scope of the range at this point of the company’s development will allow energy and resources to be focused on those things which matter most, ensuring tastier Singular Cycles fruit.
